A1–HTML

Requirement:

You MUST read the Academic Integrity policy before beginning this assignment. If you have any questions regarding what constitutes cheating, please contact your instructor.

Objectives: Gain experience using HTML.

Description: In this assignment you will create a simple web page that will serve as your résumé.

Reminder: Don't forget to set up an index page in your main folder on classweb with links to each of your assignments.

To see an example index and file structure, go to http://classweb.cob.isu.edu/ and log in with user name "studima" and password "ima2014". Remember, you can open the index.htm in your browser by clicking the View button, and then do a View Page Source in your browser to see the links, etc.

Don't forget to update your index page each time you upload an assignment.

Create a Résumé

Use Notepad++ to create an html page that will serve as the first draft of your résumé.

First save the file locally and then upload it to the server. When you are finished you can upload it to the server (classweb.cob.isu.edu) using these directions.

Be sure to do the following:

  • Your web page should be arranged like the demo page. (You are not required to use your real address and phone number for class assignments.)
  • Include the HTML5 doctype.
  • Include a title using the title tag.
  • Be sure that your résumé includes the following tags:
    • Level-one heading for name.
    • Level-two heading for email address.
    • Horizontal rule immediately after email address.
    • Paragraph containing address and phone number. (You are not required to use your real address and phone number for class assignments.) Use the horizontal bar (the key immediately above the Enter key on most keyboards) between items.
    • Level-three headings for Overview, Education, Selected Courses, etc.
    • Be sure to include each of the sections listed in the demo.
    • Paragraphs and unordered lists for section details.
    • Horizontal rules at the end of your page.
  • Nest your tags correctly.
  • Use NO formatting because you will add a style sheet later.
  • Please be sure to include a section listing any Informatics-related technical skills that you might have.
  • Try to use as much "real" information as you can, because I'd like you to give some thought to your résumé.
  • Indent code correctly.
  • Name your file resume01.htm.
  • Use Notepad++ or some other non-WYSIWYG editor to create your résumé.
  • Validate your page using the W3C Validator.
    • If you get a warning about character encoding, add these lines to your <head> section:

      <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8" />

  • Spell check your page using a site like Online Spell Check Tool.

You should ALWAYS do the following, whether I specify it or not.

  • Include the HTML5 doctype.
  • Include a title using the title tag.
  • Nest your tags correctly.
  • Indent code correctly.
  • Validate your html using the W3C HTML Validator.
  • Link your page to your index page. There will be a 15 point deduction if you fail to do so.
  • For each assignment that you set up this semester you need to include adequate commenting. For example, in the first part of this assignment you might include a comment block like the following at the top, per the instructions at the bottom of the Assignments Page.
