With apologies to the late Henry Reed, Corey McHugh provides a programming fundamentals version of Reed's Naming of Parts, which is used in our final program.  Corey was suffering through the summer session of CIS-220, and it was finally drawing to a close....

Naming of Parts   by Henry Reed (1914 - 1986)

Today we have naming of parts. Yesterday,
We had daily cleaning. And tomorrow morning,
We shall have what to do after firing. But today,
Today, we have naming of parts.
Japonica
Glistens like coral in all of the neighboring gardens,
And today we have naming of parts.

This is the lower sling swivel. And this
Is the upper sling swivel, whose use you will see,
When you are given your slings. And this is the piling swivel,
Which in your case you have not got.
The branches
Hold in the gardens their silence, eloquent gestures,
Which in our case we have not got.

This is the safety-catch, which is always released
With an easy flick of the thumb. And please do not let me
See anyone using his finger. You can do it quite easy
If you have any strength in your thumb.
The blossoms
Are fragile and motionless, never letting anyone see
Any of them using their finger.

And this you can see is the bolt. The purpose of this
Is to open the breech, as you see. We can slide it
Rapidly backwards and forwards: we call this
Easing the spring.
And rapidly backwards and forwards
The early bees are assaulting and fumbling the flowers:
They call it easing the Spring.

They call it easing the Spring: it is perfectly easy
If you have any strength in your thumb: like the bolt,
And the breech, and the cocking-piece, and the point of balance,
Which in our case we have not got;
and the almond-blossom
Silent in all of the gardens and the bees going backwards and forwards
For today we have naming of parts.

Scanning of Text   by Corey McHugh

Today we have scanning of text. Yesterday,
We had counting looping. And tomorrow morning,
We shall have a freaking scary final. But today,
Today, we have scanning of text.
Happiness
Beckons like ice cream in all of the world outside,
And today we have scanning of text.

This is the high overhead linear search. And this
Is the recursive binary search, whose use you will see,
When you are taking 221. And this is the compiling version,
Which in your case you have not got.
The swimming pools
Hold in the water their joyful, laughing kids,
Which in our case we have not got.

This is the call-by-value, which is always used
With good programming skills in the brain. And please do not let me
See anyone using by-reference. You can do it quite easy
If you have any knowledge in your brain.
The TV
Is quiet and shadowy, never letting anyone see
Any of them using by reference.

And this you can see is the boolean. The purpose of this
Is to make a selection, as you see. We can use it
As a choice within a choice within a choice: we call this
Doing some nesting.
And rapidly up and down
The summer birds are chirping and settling the trees:
They call it doing some nesting.

They call it doing some nesting: it is perfectly easy
If you have any knowledge in your brain: like the boolean,
And the iteration, and the bubble sort, and the compiling version,
Which in our case we have not got; and the TV
Silent in all of the living rooms and the birds going rapidly up and down
For today we have scanning of text.
