Downloading Software from MSDN

Go to http://msdn03.e-academy.com/isu_bus

In the resulting screen (shown below) click the Log In button.

On the next screen (below) enter the username and password that you received from Microsoft (elms_support@e-academy.com), probably with the subject line "Account Activated!" and then click the Log Me In! button.

The following screen shows any software that you have previously ordered.  Click the Software button near the top of the screen.

The subsequent screen shows several software choices.  You want to download VS 2005 Pro CD 1 and VS 2005 Pro CD 2 for this class.  If you want the full help system (recommended) you will also want to download MSDN Library for Visual Studio 2005, CD1, CD2, and CD3.  Click the icon for VS 2005 Pro CD 1.

The next screen asks if you want to download the file.  Click the Add to Cart button.

The next screen requires you to accept their license agreement.  Click the I Accept button to download the software.

Hit the Continue Shopping button and go through the process of selecting any other items that you wish to download.

Select the other items that you wish to download.

The next screen asks if you want to download the file.  Click the Add to Cart button.

The next screen requires you to accept their license agreement.  Click the I Accept button to download the software.

When you are done click the Check Out button to continue.

The next screen verifies your customer information.  If everything is okay click the Next button..

The next screen recommends that you print a copy for your records, then click Download in the Item column.  You will need to do the next four steps for each item that you want to download and install.

The next screen lists the software that you are about (maybe) to download.  You might want to print this screen too, because it includes your serial number.  You can get it later by clicking a link in the confirmation email, but it's available at this point as well.  When you are ready, click the Download button near the bottom.

A confirmation window will pop up.  Click the Save File button.  (Yes, it is finally about to download after 10 screens!!!!)

The download file will appear in your default location (i.e., wherever your browser saves files.  Mine saves it to the desktop, and the icon and filename look like the following.

Double click the file to begin the installation.  The initial screen asks for a workspace location.  Click the Continue button to, uh, continue.

Sit and stare at the resulting screen while the software installs.  A progress bar appears at the bottom of the screen to discourage you.  Bathroom breaks or snack runs are strongly encouraged.

When the download is completed click the Launch Install button.

It then opens the folder that contains an ISO file and a self extracting zip file (with an exe extension). The ISO file can be used to create a CD that can be used for the install.  Click here for more information on using an ISO file. The rest of these notes pertain to the exe file.

The exe file can be used for an immediate installation. Double click the exe file if you want to use this option.  (NOTE:  I used the ISO image for my installation since this package requires two downloads.  It seemed like the safer option.)

Be sure that the option labeled "When done unzipping open: setup.exe" is checked.

When file extraction is complete the following screen will be displayed.  Double click Visual Studio .NET to being the installation.  Follow the directions carefully.
