Teaching Philosophy

My teaching philosophy is ever-evolving, reflecting the fact that I adapt my approach to teaching as I continue along in this profession. I have learned from various professors that I have taken classes from or have taught with, and I have also learned from my students along the way. The main aspects of my approach to teaching are transparency and balance.

Transparency:

I believe that an important aspect of influencing student learning is course organization and the communication of clear objectives. In this effort, I do the following:

·         Work consistently towards a finite number of learning objectives that are established at the beginning of the semester.

·         Set mutual expectations on the first day of class.

·         Provide timely feedback on students’ learning and seek periodic feedback on my teaching.

Balance

I strive to identify and maintain a balance between various aspects in class. Some of the issues that I consider are:

·         Balance between lecture-based learning and hands-on learning

·         Balance between learning a topic and the ability to apply the knowledge

·         Balance in various media I use to influence learning

The overarching objective is to provide an environment conducive to learning. But ultimately, I see my role as a facilitator in students achieving their learning objectives
